Pharmacy technicians to be regulated from 1st July 2009

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

I thought that the arrangements for regulations of pharmacy technicians had been decided a couple of years ago, however a key milestone in the role of pharmacy technician comes in to force this summer.

From 1 July 2009 pharmacy technicians throughout Great Britain will be regulated through statute , following the Privy Council’s approval of the Health Care and Associated Professions(Miscellaneous Amendments and Practitioner Psychologists) Order 2009 on 13 May.

The approval of the Order means the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain will regulate pharmacy technicians throughout England, Scotland and Wales.

Dispensing Doctors Income over £135,000 per year

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

Ever wondered how much dispensing doctors make?

http://www.healthcarerepublic.com/news/GP/906705/GP-income-falls-GMS-PMS-practices/?CMP=EMC-DAILYNEWS

The other stat that stands out is the difference in income between salaried GP’s and GP practice partners – over £45,000 per annum on average!

I think that this is probably the same pattern in community pharmacy. As the contractors get richer the salaried pharmacists see their income squeezed.

Calls to fund second pharmacist

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

Calls are growing for the government to provide funding for a second pharmacist in all dispensaries to ensure patient safety when the Responsible Pharmacist legislation comes into force on October 1st this year.

If ever the Society needed an opportunity to prove that after they can be an effective representative body for pharmacists this has to be it.  Two pharmacists per pharmacy (Within reason) would make a massive difference to the impact community pharmacy could make to the health of the nation.

Call a General Election!

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

I’ll start by saying that I’m not a particularly political person and certainly don’t favour one party over the rest. In fact I think I’ve voted for all three parties at one stage or another. However, I think the expenses scandal has highlighted the need for a General Election to wipe the slate clean and get the country moving forward again.

MP’s claiming for 18 months worth of payments for a mortgage that has already been paid off is simply wrong but to be honest I’m as horrified that MP’s think that We should pay for their dog food!

Westminster is filled with career politicians nowadays and although I would never want to go back to the days where the landed gentry held all the power, I do think that MP’s should have had to work for a qualifying period in a “proper” job before being allowed to stand as an MP. Ten years would seem like a sensible period of time. After all, what can a 21 year old bring to the House of Commons except for their own bottle of Clearasil!

Contrary to some commentators views, I also think that it should be mandatory for politicians to have jobs outside of parliament but make it consistent. e.g all politicians should sit on the board of a company/trade union/NHS trust 1-2 days per month and that this should be funded by the company or trust engaging their services at a standard rate. You never know we might have politicians who know what’s going on in the real world and understand what needs to be done to make thinks better.

Last solution to put the Westminster world to rites; All MP’s need a residence in London so why doesn’t the country buy 660 properties in London for MP’s to live in. That way we could make sure that they all have a nice comfortable place to stay in London but the asset still belongs to the country and We could all benefit from property price increases (assuming house prices go up in the future)
