I’m on the road tomorrow meeting three of our locum pharmacists. One meeting is about a new business opportunity which is exciting and the second two meeting are to complete Enhanced CRB forms for locums working in the prison service.
What I have never understood is why pharmacists in community pharmacy are not required to be CRB checked. They have access to patient medication history and are privy to sensitive information given by both patients and prescriber’s. I know some PCT’s require that pharmacists carrying out some advanced and enhanced services are CRB checked but not all PCT’s stipulate this.
What a pain that would be I here you cry! Maybe. But the fact we are not required to be CRB checked is another example of how the powers that be, be they NHS managers or other public service commissioners, do not see pharmacists in the same light as other healthcare professionals, or at worst, not as healthcare professionals at all, but shop keepers.
So, I think pharmacists and pharmacy technicians should be CRB checked and I’d be happy to carry the costs for my locum pharmacists.
