Swine flu

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

So, we move on to the treatment phase of swine flu from the containment phase (http://www.rpsgb.org/flu/?dm_i=EQ,1D91,1SSR5,41Y7,1) and the usual decrease in cases seen in warm spells hasn’t materialised. In fact, the spread is accelerating not helped by rumours of so called “Swine flu parties” being held http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/8125191.stm

There are also reports of fake tamiflu being available both “on the streets” and via dodgy online pharmacies. In fact, tamiflu has overtaken viagra as the drug of choice for junk emails this month http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/8131911.stm

At the current rate of increase is there will be 100,000 new cases every day in the UK by the end of August which is a staggering figure and one which will have a dramatic impact in all area’s of work and life in general. As a locum pharmacist, taking time of work if you catch swine flu means a loss of income for a week which will be hard to on personal finances.

It’s inevitable that locum pharmacist will come in to contact with patients with Swine Flu sooner rather than later so it’s important that we all keep up to date with the latest guidance from the RPSGB, NHS  WHO and also make sure you have lots of stock of paracetamol, aspirin, ibuprofen and tissues!

Good luck!

Swine Flu

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

After the initial media frenzy, all seems to have gone quiet on the Swine flu front. However when you look at the data, it looks like the incidence of confirmed cases is accelerating. The BBC reported today that globally 10,000 cases have now been reported with some really acute increases – 79 confirmed in Japan over the weekend.

Locum Pharmacists need to be aware of the symptoms of swine flu, especially in holiday makers returning from Mexico and the southern states of USA.
